07.00 On instructions from Mr. Calthrop, Senior Superin-

tendent of Police, Mr. Luscombe, Assistant Superin- tendent of Police, and a Police party evacuated some relatives of Sir R. H. Kotewall from Kennedy Road. Mr. Luscombe had also been requested to evacuate a Miss Fraser from Wong Nei Chung Road but the Military refused to allow Police to go through the front line for this purpose owing to the close proximity of the enemy.

Miss Fraser was instructed

to walk to the front line. She did so and arrived in safely.

08.00 Trench mortars and heavier guns commenced shelling

the Station from Bennett Hill. Five hits were registered in twenty minutes.

08.00 The Unit was called to Queen Victoria Street on a

complaint that looting was taking place. Drastic action had to be taken.

08.00 Police dealt with looters passing through the front line on complaint from the Military that their line of fire was being masked. The Food Control were asked to fetch food seized from looters but no lorries were sent.

09.00 Police evacuated to the air raid tunnel near the permanent cemetery. The Station was hit twice by heavy shells after leaving. Mr. Searle, Assistant Superintendent of Police, visited shortly before the move.

Mr. Luscombe, Assistant Superintendent of Police, received a complaint from the Chinese restaurant concerned that owing to heavy shell fire they were unable to supply the Chitose Hotel, where Japanese women and children were located, with food. Sergeant was sent along, and he reported that the internees were all right and that he had arranged with the restaurant to continue the supply of food. 12.00 Mr. Heath, Assistant Superintendent of Police,

returned to resume duty as No.2 Sub Area Commander. Mr. Luscombe, Assistant Superintendent of Police, and Insp. Whant remained to assist.

16.00 Messrs. Heath and Luscombe, Assistant Superinten-

dents of Police, took two Police patrols up to the front line in connection with a complaint made that sniping by Fifth Columnists was going on. On investigation this was found to be coming from the enemy themselves. The Station was under very heavy and continuous shell and mortar fire. On the re- turn of the two Police parties, whilst the gate of the Station compound was being opened an Indian Police Constable on guard there was wounded by shrapnel. He was conveyed under the very heavy fire to hospital by P. S. A.53 Brown and L. Ss. A.176 Bodie, A.172 Leslie and A. 26 Gordon with another Sikh Constable (name and number unknown). L.S.A-
